MONTPELIER, Vt. The Vermont Legislature will consider moving up the date of next year's primary, a move that Gov. Jim Douglas says is motivated by politics, to give political candidates more time to campaign. But Democratic Secretary of State Deb Markowitz, who is running for governor, says the reason to is to make sure Vermont soldiers serving overseas can vote. Congress has passed a law that says states must send out absentee ballots to overseas voters at least 45 days before the November election.

A new federal law will require Vermont to set an earlier primary election date, just as a host of Democrats are clamoring to replace the retiring Republican Gov. James Douglas. Vermont's primary is now set for Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2010, but the federal law passed last month by the U.S. Congress requires states to send out absentee ballots to overseas voters at least 45 days before an election. That makes the timeline between the Sept. 14 date and the November 2, 2010 general election very difficult for

Fellow Senators Susan Bartlett and Doug Racine, and Secretary of State Deb Markowitz are announced candidates actively raising money.

I think we are strengthened by that debate, as long as we don't criticize each other   -Peter Shumlin

Now that Lt. Gov. Brian Dubie has announced his intentions to run for governor, the state's political landscape has become a lot clearer — and that landscape might pose a surprisingly stiff challenge for Democrats to take back the governor's seat. Consider that Dubie fits that classic all-American persona — a physically fit man who is a commercial pilot with a military background, former school board chairman of one of the state's largest towns (Essex Junction), and a politician with seven years experien
